Labyrinth

The Crescent is a mixed-use office, hotel, retail and dining complex design by the late architect, Philip Johnson. The artist was responsible for creating sculptural seating elements for two office tower lobbies. The architectural of the entire complex is constructed of Indiana limestone, which became the media of choice for the artwork as well. In this neoclassical yet modern setting, painters from Italy created revived classical style works for each of the two lobbies. The imagery carved into the limestone seating sculptures and planting columns is based upon known patterns of medieval labyrinths and pays tribute to computer circuitry.
