MINNEAPOLIS BEAUTIFUL PROJECT / US BANCORP HEADQUARTERS
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota

To create a sense of threshold, a series of black granite boulders, with polished cubed forms emerging from the stones, are laid out in a circle that encompasses both the interior and exterior of the main entrance to the building. The boulders rest on a stone carpet of black and white digitalized paving, forming an outdoor and indoor room and providing much-needed seating along Nicollet Mall. Joining this ring of stones are three massive vertical monoliths that flank the building's entrance and create a sense of an entryway experience. These monoliths are fabricated from raw granite quarry blocks with a natural surface marked with drill marks from which emerge polished cubic forms. The entire streetscape of this block, designed by the artist, features solid granite seat-wall/planters which provide seating and contain gingko and serviceberry trees, native prairie grasses and wildflowers.
