The design of a terrazzo floor for Terminal 4 of the Fort Lauderdale International Airport consists of a wave pattern that the artist uncovered in the research phase of the project. The popular and iconic Fort Lauderdale “Wave Wall” that occurs on the beachfront promenade provided the basis of the idea for the wave pattern to be realized in terrazzo. The wave-based terrazzo design progresses in a linear fashion in an east/west axis. Additionally the terrazzo design entails a gradation of aqua-based colors that gradate along the north/south axis of the terminal. The gradation of color picks up on the variety of colors inherent in the sea. In addition to the gradation of the aqua colored base color of the terrazzo scheme, a matrix of marble chips, colored synthetic chips, recycled glass and mother of pearl enrich the wave-like design into a beautiful and simple pattern.
